Only является одной из наиболее распространенных частиц в современном английском языке. Чаще всего она выполняет ограничительную функцию, и ее эквивалентами становятся русские частицы только и лишь:
• "You mean you don't enjoy it?"
"Enjoy it? Are you kidding? I only do this for my health." (DL: 42)
"Вы хотите сказать, вам это не нравится?"
"Как это может нравиться. Вы шутите? Я делаю это только ради здоровья."
• The conference only opened yesterday, and there are hundreds of people. (DL: 194)

Стоит отметить, что, как видно в частности из приведенных примеров, в современном языке частица only обычно ставится перед глаголом-сказуемым, а не тем словом, к которому непосредственно относится.
Кроме того, only может иногда выполнять эмфатическую (усилительную) функцию. Здесь возможно усиление разных значений и, соответственно, разные варианты перевода:

Отдельно стоит рассмотреть сочетания only с другими словами, которые, по сути, представляют собой составные частицы. Первая из них - only just - выполняет ограничительную функцию, приближаясь к русскому едва, хотя переводиться может и по-другому, в зависимости от контекста:

Другая интересная составная частица - only too - является усилительной и по значению приближается к английскому усилительному наречию very, однако, в отличие от very, несет в себе дополнительный имплицитный смысл - говорящий считает что-то неожиданным (для себя или собеседника) или достойным сожаления. В переводе происходит передача усилительного значения, а также, при контекстуальной возможности, экспликация дополнительного смысла, как показывают следующие примеры:
